I'm planning to get rid of the art. plants in my tank and replacing with real ones. Currently I have 1/4 inch gravel as a substrate, I do believe this is not suitable,,,,,is sand the best route?,,,and how do i go about the changeover (of substrate )without risking a re cycling ?

If you want to have plants you might be better off using Flourite or one of the other substrates made for plants. Sand will work if you want but it won't be as good. Adding something like laterite to the sand would help.

The preference these days seems to be for pool filter sand. Some other things people use are Schultz Aquadic soil and Profile. I bought some profile the other day at HD, 25lbs was $1.00. Some people object to its lightness.

There are oother things people use but those are the most common.
