TANK CRASH! Please learn from my mistake

Thanks... rrkss....I will do that...It is a 55gal and I was wondering how much salt do i use...I am using a fluval 304 and the tank has some slate in it so it might take away from the water volume. And after the salt treatment what kind of water replacement should I do...or any?

Read this article about ich and follow his treatment protocal for salt. I leave the salt in for 14 days and waterchange it out 40% at a time.

Sorry about the crash, Moo....I completely understand how, over time, you get spoiled by success and bypass the quarantine. I must admit that, because most my stock comes directly from breeders that I know personally, I too don't usually quarantine. After 37 years, you would think I'd know better. Hehe...oh well...hey NEWBIES....don't do what we do...do what we say...QUARANTINE! ;)

Sorry about your loss!!
The same thing happened to me!! I bought only 3 zebra danios to add to my tank and they ended up killing everything else and I had to start all over from scratch. My fish died off just like yours, they just became weak and within 2 days were dead, there was nothing I could do. Someone told me that there was possibly a virus in the fish, but who knows??
This is why I don't buy fish from petco/petsmart/wal-wart because ALL there tanks are linked together and there is no telling what some of the fish are carring there. Just too much risk!!

thanks for all the condolenses guys (and gals). I thought I'd share an easy cheeap recipe for a Q-tank for those of you interested.

Materials

10g tank (even a rubbermaid storage box will sufice, but 10g are so cheap)
heater (the cheap one you would NEVER put on your main tank will work great)
Sponge filter and air pump

Take the sponge from the filter and place it in your Hang-on-back filter/canister filter. If you have to, simply put the sponge in the corner of the tank behind a rock. Within a couple weeks the sponge will have enough bacteria built up to provide sufficient filtration for the small bioload you will usually be putting in the Q-tank. Keep the rest of the equipment in a closet or basement until you need it. Simple. Easy.

Good Luck everyone.

Moo, sorry to hear of your loss. I've been tempted to bypass the QT, but you've convinced me otherwise.

would a 2.5 gall be good enough to quarantine? i just happen to have one laying around
That's enough for a guppy or two. I QT'd four swordtails in a 10G and they where highly stressed by not having enough room to swim. My 29G display tank is a little too small for them.

i quarrantine for 4 weeks minimum, and actually i just lost 2 fish that had been quarrantined for almost 6 weeks because they were wild caught, but i attributed that to them being wild caught and not used to my tnak conditions.
