So we recently just got an Oscar, and it's our first. Someone might be giving us a 40 gallon breeder tank and a stand with everything we pretty much need except a lid.. I just tried looking online, and had no luck whatsoever finding one. Are lids easy to build or no? He said lowes or home depot can make one, but I don't know if that's true or not. I think it might just be easier to buy a 55 gallon, but some aren't that great of a size for that big of a fish(he's just a baby now). We aren't going to have real plants or anything. Just Harold. :) Can someone tell me which would be better? A 40 gallon with no lid, or a 50 gallon(with our without a lid...)? Thanks!! :)

A glass canopy for a 40B should be a basic 36" x 18" canopy. They usually arn't all that hard to find. Usually between $25-$35.

Not sure if Home Depot can do it (the one near me won't cut glass), but Lowes usually has a glass cutter. Then you just need a stick on handle and a hinge. Remember to leave space for the filter/wires/hoses in the measurements.

You really want a top on any tank unless you want your fish on the floor.

I think the 40 breeder is a great tank because it is wide front to back. It gives the fish plenty of room to swim.

The glass tops are available either from Aqueon (versa-tops) or Top fin. You will need to measure the inside rim of the tank to make sure you get one that fits right. Sometimes the same size aquarium from one manufacturer is slightly different sized from another.

a 40 gallon is not large enough for a full grown oscar. a 55 is barely big enough, and filtration needs to be top notch.

get a 75 or larger.

Agree with the 75gal as a minimum, don't worry about your oscar being small now, keep in mind that within 6 months or so he will be about half his adult size (depending on diet, stay away from feeder fish!, i recommend a good quality pellet diet, hikari makes one that works great)

Oscars get big and they are eating machines... the bigger the tank, the better for these guys. While they do require you to spend more $$$ on a tank/equipment at first, you'll find that Oscars have personalities like no other fish and you'll be "rewarded" for your efforts everytime your Oscar sees you. They're like water dogs!

they are absolute puppies once their full personalities come out! i can't walk past my Gus's tank without him begging, lol. and he plays with a floating ball too. silly fish dog.......

I have a lemon oscar just a baby I call him one eyed jack but he is in a 55g right now...I am going to get a bigger tank just waiting for petco to do their $ a gallon sale again then the tank only costs the same as the number of gallons it is that you want to buy it is a nice money saver if you don't need something bigger immediatly

Petco usually limits the $1/gallon sale to 55g and below (one time it may have even been 40g and below).

Craigslist is usually pretty good for getting larger tanks for about a $1/gallon, but depends on your area and how common fish tanks are.
