Tank Size

Ok, so I've had my 55 gallon for about 2.5 months...I'm shopping for another. I was thinking of a cichlid tank this time. I love the cockatoo dwarf cichlids..so would a 40L be a good size for dwarf cichlids? I can't decide whether to do a 33L or a 40L. I like the idea of getting smaller tanks..(notice I use the word tanks..not tank :Angel: ).

Any advice?

says here that they need at least a 40L, so I guess a 40L should be fine for a pair of them and *possibly* (please don't scold me if I'm wrong) another pair of apistos, *maybe* a pair of drawf flags although it says there that they need a 75L, anybody know if a thats wrong?
 
Wow a 40L is only big enough for a pair of dwarf cichlids? I was hoping I could get more than 2 dwarfs in a 40L. Maybe I need to regroup?? :huh:

You could probably add more and get away with it (it won't be stunting the fish or anything), but I think it would be better to just add a school of small tetras and maybe some otto's, for teritorial reasons. I'm not an expert on any kind of cichlids so I might be wrong.
 
Cichlids of any kind are very territorial and that is why they need so much room. I have 6 south american cichlids in a 125 gallon and I consider this tank maxed out because of the territory issues with this particular family of fish.

IMO a 40L or 10g is too small for a pair any kind of dwarf cichlids unless they are a breeding pair :( a 20g would be much better suited and you could include some other fish like a school of tetras or something or maybe some... :rolleyes: :OT: anyways I'm sure you could do it but I personally wouldn't.

It's been my experience that cichlids should be with cichlids and other fish with other fish. Cichlids are way too aggresive to be with tetras.Yes, even the dwarf varieties.

Wow, and the person I've been talking to about tank pricing etc in Massachusetts said that the Cockatoo Cichlids are docile...friendly fish..I'm confused.. :help: I guess I need to do some big time research on them.

Lots of activity, keep it 1 m/3-4 f.

Tetras, rasboras and barbs can be kept and often are, with most SA dwarfs. The larger the tank the better with apistos to bring out their odd behavior.
