I’ve had my tank for a few months and everything has been peachy until I woke up this morning. The pH went from 7.0 to 6.0 overnight, the water is cloudy, and my fish are all near the surface obviously breathing heavily. What in the world could have caused this sudden change? I don’t have any ammonia problems and I do not over feed. 2-3 water changes a week. I’m considering getting an airpump/airstone to help with aeration of the tank. I’m concerned oxygen levels have dipped dangerously low. Any other help ideas?

It seems you have a bloom of some sort. Aquarium water gets cloudy in new tanks do to the "ammonia process" and it seems the same case here. I think its ammonia making them go to the surface as a filter should put air in the aquarium

yeah, it doesn't make sense.... what is the temp of the tank? What is in the tank? How long has the tank been running? What are the exact numbers of the tank in addition to the pH you've listed?

hmmm... emperor double bio wheel filter... 80 degrees, rock caves, plastic plants, feed them bloodworms, brine shrimp, sinking pellets, algae wafers. Test often... Ammonia/Nitrite 0ppm. Nitrate 10-30ppm.

I should say that I used to get false high readings of Ammonia... It would say 8.0ppm because I had Ammo-Lock in there. So I stopped using it... had no problems for weeks. now my tank is all messed up. I have begun using it again for fear that ammonia has gone back up.

Does that help? I can't think of anything else.

maybe ammo-lock has interfered with the cycling process and when you stopped using it you went into a cycle?

Have you tested the water today? If it were me, I would stop adding the Ammo-lock and do a water change. Adding chemicals to fix a problem never really made sense to me. IMO, water changes are the tried and true fixes for any water problem.

that would **** me off.

let's say thats the case, what would be my best bet... my fish are dying so I got to try something. large water change?

I cycled the tank for 3 months before adding fish. Ammonia never seems to go away.

I completely agree with you about the water changes. I do a water change every three days to ensure top quality water. I can't believe this is happening!

how much water do you change? Is the only reason you do it so often because you believe it will ensure better conditions? You can limit it to 30-50% weekly.... what's in your tank?

Do a water change now, don't forget the water conditioner..... do you use a python?
