How do I know how much weight my tank stand can take? As you might have gathered I want to set up a lake malawi tank so I plant on puting in some decent rock work. And if you would like to show of your aquarium aquascape please do. Oh if you look closely at the pci you cna see my bolivians sizing eachother up:grinyes:

And also how much limestone or crushed coral is enought to buffer the water and add ph? Are there any other cichlids then saulosi that are possible to get for my 45 G because my family is also interested but some dont like the idea of just having saulosi, but I do plan on keeping some.

Thanks.

I have a similar stand that I built then 'skinned.' I made it for my reef. I have atleast 60lbs of sand then atleast 200 lbs of live rock. One thing to remember is that water weighs approx 8 lbs per gallon and rock will be 8-10 lbs per gallon. If you're worried about rock weight then you should be woried about water weight. If it holds water it will hold any amount of rock.

I never had to worry about it when I did my mbuna tank. I went to Lowes and purchased some egg crate, using in drop ceilings. like here-

This is cut-to size and put in BEFORE the rock and sand/gravel. This helps distribute the weight of the rocks. I probably had about 80lbs of rock in a 55g, with no problems. Hope I helped!

i agree with what was said above. in tanks that i fill with rock i put a layer of eggcrate under the sand, that stuff cant be broken when its laid horizontal

Stand looks like it is good for that tank, 4 x 4 in a vertical position is a strong focal point..

Pittbull what do you mean exactly by 4x4?

I would consider putting at least a back on that stand, to provide some lateral support. the plywood back would provide alot of additional bracing, and a better piece of mind.

Your vertical pieces of wood i meant 2x4 sorry about that i guess all this snow we are getting i was thinking of going 4x4ing at any rate Zig is right a sheet of plywood around the stand would add extra bracing..

No worries thanks
