We dont have Wal-Marts in South Australia
but I know exactly what you mean.
In the shopping malls there are pet stores and they
have fish like goldfish, zebras and occasionaly some angelfish and stuff.
Its really tragic seeing the tanks.
In fact ever since I stopped keeping Orandas and moved
to tropicals I dont even go into those shops.
The sight of those sad aquariums makes me ill.
but I know exactly what you mean.

I really wish that there were laws....I mean...how would ppl react if it was a dog the store was mis-treating?
Same experience here in the Atlanta, GA area. Most of the stores only have one 'fish person' and that person appears to be a part timer in some stores (example, only working 4 days a week for 4 hours a day). In addition, they often sell very small examples of large fish, like tinfoil barbs, common plecos and bala sharks (not that other pet stores avoid doing this too).
They really ought to get out of selling fish and just stick with supplies. My guess is that they sell the fish to help drive sales of the more profitible supplies.

what's disheartening is that places like Big al's are starting to get bad as well. They bulk up WAY too much on fish like corys and neons, there are always several dead fish (10+) because there are like 100 fish in a 30 gallon tank. All this just to "meet demand"
If they need to meet demand then a place like big al's should be buying MORE stores.

It wont be long until walmart increases the size of their pet sections and puts petco and petsmart out of business.
saw a piece on the evening news where walmart has opened in china. in the meat department they sell live soft shell turtle.
cute little guys. looked about 6-10 inches around.

At the Walmart I frequent here, the fish section is in reasonably good shape. I bought two tanks of "Rosey red" minnows for my pond there, and all appeared to be pretty healthy. I did not notice any conspicuously sick fish in any of the other tanks, either. Not saying that Walmart is perfect, but they do not appear to have a consistent problem in this regard.
we don't have wal-marts, and the fishies aren't that bad in LFS. minor deaths.
however the LH tanks are more well taken care of due to the value.
i went to an exhibition and i saw this exhibitor putting Oscars, LHs and African Cichlids all in the same tank. looks like 3- 4 ft tank.
