Has anyone ever used one of these tap water filters? My water is quite hard and i was reading about this filter on Dr. fosters and smith. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=4484&N=2004+113775

I've been considering an RO unit, but with (several) large tank i dunno if it would be economical. I'm not planning to keep discus or anything and i've had a school of Head and tail light tetras without a single loss but i can't help but think they'd be hapier in softer water. Anyones experiance with this or similar products would be a great help.

If you have very hard water and a lot of tanks, a reverse osmosis system will actually be cheaper to run than the Tap Water Filter. It uses a mixed ion exchange bed (which means that for all practical purposes, you can't recharge it), and hard water will exhaust the resin rapidly. You'll be replacing resin cylinders constantly, and they are expensive.

It's a fine uint if you only need to generate small amounts of deionized water, or if your tap water is only slightly hard, but for purifying large quantities of hard water it's not the way to go.

Generally speaking most fish, including the ones you have, are very adaptable to harder water conditions and thrive. Unless it is a particularly sensitive species that just has to have soft water at all times, usually the only time it can be an issue is if you want to spawn certain species that just won't without softer water.
