I have suction cups with stainless steel hooks holding up a basking platform in my RES tank. I used stainless because I knew it wouldn't rust. It is getting a whitish tarnish to it. Is this normal, and is it ok to have in the tank?

Stainless steel does not tarnish, it corrodes.

It's most likely due to acidification.

I wouldn't use any form of metal, ever in aquarium items if possible. Naturally they're to be found in filter impellars, etc...but only very specific grades. Stay with plastic.

Duly noted. I think I'm going to use safe silicon to just stick the suction cups to the brackets. It'll make the whole thing more solid and easier to deal with in the long run.
