tattooed fish! disgusting

today at my LFS i saw more discus. real surprise right?
but these werent any regualr discus.
they didnt have tails. they all got cut off. now that is disgusting.

it happens to blood parrots too, and they say it makes them look like hearts, and they are labeled as Love Birds.

theres a fish store about a block away from my house. you'd think i would do most of my shopping there but no way. they carry dyed parrots in the most ugly colors (green, purple, yellow, orange) and their regular parrots are unhealthy. then to cap it off, they also carry paint injected glass tetras. i am almost sorry that i bought some fish food there, before i saw these things. i merely go in to browse now (i love to visit the ranchu's) but will not buy from there.

Oh my gosh this is a horribley disturbing thread, those poor fish and the ones who's tails got cut off just to call them something cutesy :(
I am suprised they are a. allowed to do this to the fish and b. stores are selling them.. What's next ?? That's the scary thing I mean I bet 5 to 10 years ago there would have been an out cry it seems cruelty is back "In".

You stop buying from the establishment that sells/promotes them.

You contact sensible animal rights groups to help.

You ignore the fringe groups like PETA/ALF/ELF that want your money.

would you happen to know any sensible animal rights groups?

SPCA? Maybe if they had some real facts they could get involved

perhaps your ASPCA could help if you told them how many fish had to die, and how the fish are dyed (not so much the ASPCA, but the animal cops affiliated with it.)

yeah, makes sense.

this whole fish dyeing, tattooing is extremely bad and i would not buy anything like this and would advise others no too either.

as for the likes of PETA and its fringe nutcase groups you can not support these groups and keep fish at the same time its hypocritical to do so as PETA and the like want all fish and animals to be free with no exceptions.

While I agree that tatooing fish is disgusting, I must say that the physical alterations of all types of animals, mainly pets, has been happening for years. Mostly these alterations are for asthetic purposes. I show horses and I remember a few years ago on the western pleasure circuit, the in thing to do was to cut a nerve in the horses tail to prohibit them from moving their tail in the show ring (also not letting them get flies off of themselves). This was supposed to be the ideal. Eventually the industry weeded that trend out, and hopefully the aquarium hobbyist world will do the same.
I think you guys are doing a great job at informing people on this site with your great arguments. Every little bit helps. Even if one person comes here and learns the evils of fish tatooing and the like, than that is a job well done.
