tattooed fish! disgusting

I went to the fish store to get the rest of the congos for my school. This is a well established store-been there at least 20 years, the fish are healthy, the staff pretty well knowledgable, but I almost walked out the door when I saw the tattooed fish. But, the only other shop I know of that sells congos takes terrible care of their freshwater fish, though the marine area is spotless.

There were several kissing gouramis and an oscar with red and blue spots 'tattooed' on the flanks. Obviously fake and certainly not attractive. I don't get it. They also had some dyed tetras.

I did buy my congos there, but I'll have to go somewhere else anyway to find the pearl gouramis and loaches, so I don't know if I'll be back there.

BTW, I added the new congos and they schooled right up with the previous six and now all of them hover in the front of the tank, no longer hiding. They are lovely too, under the new 50/50 daylight/blue actinic light I bought. It shows them up much better than the light that came with the tank, which turned everything pink.

it never hurts to mention your 'disgust' to the management. tell them how many fish are killed during this process and that you'll not be buying any fish or hardgoods from them until they stop purchasing these fish and selling them. it'll probably fall on deaf ears but if everyone did this, perhaps they'd get the message.
 
I told my LFS exactly that, and they stopped carrying them.

I spent a lot of money there and just quit going in. I had to go in for an emergency item and they didn't have any of the altered fish.

Ask if they even know what goes on. A lot of the time they don't know.
 
Hi I had a similar experience at Petland here in my hometown of Columbus, GA ... I expressed my disgust explained the horror of the dyeing process and they just basically said whatever! So i told them I would personally boycot the store and suggest that all of my friends, coworkers and family boycot them as well. There are a few petition websites, look in my signature for what seems to be one of the most common. And you would definetely help if you never shop there again. :)
 
I agree. I went to my LFS and I was horrified to see a tank of tatooed platies- I give that LFS alot of my business, I buy all my fish there, and I couldn't believe they stocked fish like that.
 
I really don't understand the attraction of dyed fish at all. And you just know people are buying them because fish stores are still ordering and supplying them. :devil:

Worse thing I have ever seen was a parrot with it's face dyed to imitate wearing makeup *barf*

It had blue over the eyes for "eye shadow", red cheeks for "blush" and red lips for "lipstick".

Absolutely revolting!

That's disgusting! Who would even want that in their tank? I feel so terrible for the fish...
 
tell them this

there are 100 fish to be dyed.
80 will die during or soon after being injected or dipped or whatever process
10 will die within a week from stress and disease
5 will die within 3 months from an easily treated diesease like ich
3 will die after six months because their bodies cant take the dye anymore
the reamining two will die wthin 2 to 5 years and be horribly stunted and sickly, along with losing the color that was injected into them
