At the local LFS there are white tattooed fish. Can anyone identify what kind of fish it is? I read somewhere that they were mollies but there are several different kinds of mollies. Has anyone had any experience with these fish? No, I don't believe in doing this to fish but they deserve a chance at a good life. It isn't the fish's fault that was done to them. A lot of people think that if you don't buy them, they will stop doing it but that's just not true. Everyone is outraged by walmart fish but every walmart in a 100 mile radius of where I live still sells them and has no intent on stopping. Even if every person in America said, "no more" that won't stop it from happening somewhere else. The owner said those fish were the biggest profit they had in the live fish. I really don't believe in tattooing something that can't say "no" to it but I would like to give the fish a decent home so it can at least live the rest of its life in peace. Anyone know what kind and how to take care of them?

From what i've seen they appear to be mollies.
I've seen them come and go at my LFS, enough people complained and they stopped ordering them. Honestly, I'd never buy them

It's good that someone thought it was wrong. The owner of my LFS said she'd buy them as long as they make them. Considering they are considered to be a "lucky charm" in some countries, she's going to be buying them for a long time. I'm not intending to support the practice, just the poor fish. I think of it the same as adopting a abused dog from a shelter. It isn't the dog's fault it's abused. I think abused animals deserve a home more than any other, so at least they know some peace in their lives(even if it is for a short while).

MsJinkzd is right.Though we may value our fish as much as people value their dogs and cats, unfortunately the fish trade is about what sells and who's buying.Thats why you will hear it called the "ornamental" fish trade. Many people, even some good, decent, tank owners I know view fish as decorations, that are devoid of "feelings" like pain and fear. That is why painted and tattooed fish continue to sell.I understand the plight of the mom-n-pop fish store. They are doing whatever to keep the economy and the chains from swallowing them up.But,we can do our part by not ever buying these fish. And,beware of trade names like "fruity tetra",or "blueberry tetra".There are even red-tailed botias they dye a garish dark blue even though the natural blue-grey coloration is gorgeous.Good luck...

If people don't buy them, then there is no market for them. By not purchasing them in the first place, it will make a difference. It's too bad that every year around this time, these tattooed fish start to show up in pet stores. If everyone would just not buy them, then the stores would stop ordering them.

It's true, money does make the world go round. I can't wait until another pet store opens up around here. I plan on buying two. It's so sad that people don't view fish as living, feeling creatures. My fish greet me in the morning just like my dog and cat do, they just do it in a different way. My first fish were mollies and guppies(technically it was bettas but that was before I was even a teen). Anyone have any idea what kind of molly? I know it's not that great a picture. 67chevelle, why do they show up around this time? Is it their spawning time or something?

:joe: Uh,earth to Valkyrie... Did you read what any of us wrote about not buying them???

How do they even tattoo the fish...sounds like alot of work to me...and does it even last long or does it fade over time like the dyed fish.

A clever invention, but cruel none the less

As already mentioned by above posters...buying tattooed fish is not a good idea...
