I would like to paint (or cover) the back of my tank in black. Trouble is, it is only 2" from the wall. I was wondering if I could completely drain the tank, move it away from the wall, paint (or cover) it, move it back, re-level with a bubbleometer, and then re-fill. Would there be a risk of the glass cracking?

BTW, even though it is only a 30G, the stand is built to support many times that weight and is quite rigid. Also, there is about 120 to 140 lbs of substrate, gravel etc. in the tank. The floor is tiled and is somewhat uneven and the tank is currently shimmed to level it.

You should just do what I did, take big pieces of black construction paper to the back, looks great and is cheap, and, if you get bored of it, you can change.

Really, NJ? it looks good? I was going to go the route of getting the plastic film and squeeging the thing on. I've got nothing to lose trying your idea. Going out now to by a sheet of black cardboard! *pitter patter of winter construction boots, followed by squeel of tires*
 
I also used black construction paper on my 29G, which is also just a few inches from the wall. It looks great! Save yourself the headache! If nothing else, give it a try first - all it will cost is about a buck and a little time and tape.
 
Yea, when I have to move around my 10g tank, I don't even take the water out because there is no need to with such a small tank, I just push the stand(old sewing table) very slowly until I get it to where I want it. If you have a bigger tank, you should take out all the water and fish and move it to where you want it.
