I'v been having trouble not only finding livestock for a temperate marine aquarium, but even decent, updated literature on them (this is particularly puzzling to me given the numerous public aquaria that house coldwater species). I have found one good book by Dr. Roland Anderson (Aquarium Husbandry of Pacific Northwest Marine Invertebrates), but have yet to locate material on aquarium critters from the Northeast US, UK/Ireland, South Africa, Tasmania, etc. Even a good website might be helpful. Any suggestions, anyone? Also, does anyone know of collectors/importers that operate in any of these areas? Thanks...

Good luck in your quest, keep us posted as I find this subject very interesting and would love to follow a thread on setting up a temperate tank.....

more interest in temperate marine stuff?

Good to see that I am not utterly alone in my interest in all stuff temperate marine... I commend you your great courage in stepping forward, Lorna, and suggest that you and all check out one such aquarist who has met with some obvious success in this discipline (his tropical "tank" is equally astonishing) at www.oregonreef.com

Thanks!

More to add... I forgot to mention another noteworthy resource, The Temperate Reef Aquarium by David Wrobel. The author offers only a tantalizingly brief treatment of each critter, technique, technology, etc, but only because he covers a hell of a lot of stuff. I'm not sure about its availability these days, I recently obtained my copy directly from the publisher (Sealife Supply in Sand City, CA). Dr. Anderson's book (which I mentioned earlier) is apparently only available from the Seattle Aquarium, where I believe he is a curator. A simple table of basic water parameters for coldwater aquaria can be found at www.foreshores.net and could serve as a good starting point. I guess I'd really recommend a particular field guide as well, at least to those interested primarily in Pacific Coast stuff, Guide to Marine Invertebrates by Daniel W. Gotshall-- pricey, but better still than a crappy cheap field text, which is worth nothing. Anyway, if anyone out there knows of any good reading on the subject, please hook me up. Cheers...

Yeah, thanks for that, I really dig detailed documentation of other aquarists' work, especially when they are working with really unusual stuff like yourself. I particularly find the emphasis on marine plants interesting. Keep us posted on your progress...
