Temperature Fluctuations

Just got one of those digital thermometers with temp. alert. After looking at the suction cup thermometers for years and now reading digital numbers, changes in temp. seem larger and more drastic to me. Probably because I'm getting more data. I can see it rise through the day and get memory recal of the high/low temp. since the last time I checked. Anyway, the high point in temp. comes just before lights off at night - 79.2F. In the morning, I've seen the temp. as low as 77.6F on a cold night. That's a 1.6 degree change overnight. The indoor temp. of my home is around 70 during the day and 60-65 at night. So at night with the tank lights off and the room temp falling, my tank temp. could fall as much as 1.6 degrees. On most nights, however, it seems to fall about .8 degrees. Does anyone see any probs. with this or am I just paranoid?

If things have been okay so far, I'd say you have nothing to worry about. A change of 1.6*F over a number of hours seems okay to me. It's a gradual change - your house cools down and warms up over time - so it's not nearly as stressful as a sudden change. Bodies of water in nature aren't a perfect steady temperature, I'm sure there are many places that cool down by a degree or so each night.

That is likely a smaller temp change than any of the inhabitants face in the wild. I would not be at all concerned. My higher light tanks have more difference than that from the end of the light cycle to the start of the next lights-on cycle, and my hous'e temp. swing is tiny if present at all.

No kidding, I have difficulty finding time with the two I have set up! Is your job breeding fish? Hard to imagine having a day job as well!

I have never used a digital temp meter, but would like to see how it would read my tanks. I usually use more heater wattage than necessary and my house is around 5 to 8 degrees cooler than my tanks. Never seen any change on either the stick on or suction cup models, though!
