Hi,

Can Zebra Danios tolerate a temperature variation of +/- 5 degrees, as long as they are within the acceptable parameters of 64-75? Would a heater be absolutely necessary, or they'll be ok with a 5 degree variation?

thanks

I would imagine that they could tolerate the fluctuation.

http://www.ebi.ac.uk/2can/genomes/eukaryotes/Danio_rerio.html

makes mention of rice paddies and the Ganges river. I would suspect that they have more temperature fluctuation during runoff than your fish tank provides. While I can't say anything as to how often these fluctuations impact mortality rates, obviously the species survives.

Besides that, Danio's have a reputation for being hearty. Looking around I see them used for genetic experiments, and being used like rats to determine ichthyoid toxicity. They are typical beginner fish, and used to cycle tanks.

Long story short, I would think that they'd be fine, but nearly all fish do better in terms of stress without the fluctuation. Inducing spawn being a questionable exception, of course.

Story time...

One water change this past summer I was filling up the tank. I noticed that the incoming water had the "shimmering" effect, typical of a difference in water temp. I figured it wasn't very large but decided to check the water anyways. It was freezing to the touch! By this time the tank (30 gallon) was nearly full but I rushed to turn the water temp up. Over the next half hour or so I watched the water temp drop from around 80 degrees to the lower 70's, which is a large change in a short time. Activivty noticeably decreased with the cooler temps but every fish survived the fiasco. In short, danios are tolerant of a lot of things and my experience shows temperature fluctations as one of them. I wouldn't make a practice of it but if it does happen, don't stress about it.

im sure in the wild, 5 deg temp changes are common. shade, water depth, ect. but im sure temp never goes below 70. i have 2 tanks in my computer room. its about 10 deg warmer than the rest of my house. i guess location in your home is more of the issue

Temp in new Delhi right now is 43F, . Wikipedia is saying the delta sits about 57-95F for water temp depending on the season. This time of year it's supposed to be 57-77F. The Rajshahi hits similar lows, not sure about the Padma river. Some site I found here:
http://www.aaas.org/international/ehn/waterpop/bang.htm
reports the Ganges proper falls to about 50F.

This isn't exactly in-depth research, but it gives you an idea of what they can tolerate.
