Testing rocks. What am I looking for exactly?

I went out today in 15*F weather and nearly a foot of snow (was going stir crazy) and collected about 50lbs of rocks, small and large from a creek near here. After carrying them in a 5g bucket for about a half mile, I get them home and start "testing" them with vinegar.

What am I looking for exactly? Nearly every single one produces atleast a film of tiny bubbles. A few actually spew like a volcano, so, I know those are out. The "film" I am referring to just makes them look a little grey. I am worried about these as well? Could it just be mineral deposits on the outside? Maybe algae? I dunno.

Maybe someone could shed some light on this for me. And does anyone else smell pickles? Or is it just me?

On a side note, I found an awesome piece of driftwood while I was looking for the rocks. Not sure how to handle it though. I know the routine. It's just that this piece is way too big for any of the pots we have to boil it. I do intend on cutting it down some though, as it is too big for my 55g. it would fit. It would just make the tank look small is all. Other than the aquarium, I dont even have anywhere to soak it. It's sycamore though, so tannins shouldnt be much of an issue (I hope). Regardless, I'm more concerned with the rock issue for now.

You can cook the driftwood in your oven instead of boiling it. It takes longer but is just as effective...that's how people do it for large reptiles tanks :) Here's a link or two on how to do it...

If this doesn't help, do a Google search for "Sterilizing Driftwood".....

You smell pickles because vinegar is one of the main ingredients in making dill pickles hehehe :)
