tetra disease?

I've noticed in the past few days that one of my neon tetras is starting to turn a white colour.... he seems to be fine though, still swimming, eating, schooling... tho somethines his swimming isn't as great as before..

I don't have a quarantine tank, as I can't afford to purchase another tank at the current moment, I do have a 5gallon tank, but it's in use of my betta..

What should I do?? :confused: ... I've read that the disease can be spread to other fish if they fed off the fish if it dies... I do have a big fish bowl which the betta use to be in, should I move the tetra into this bowl, and add salt? :help:
 
I've encountered this as well. The fish is already infected well before the whiteness shows up. I tried to cull the neons showing white but it did not help. All neons were infected.

Other fish such as Angel fish can also catch "neon tetra disease" so research all the different fish that can catch it. If those fish exist in the same tank I recommend euthanizing all the neons. They are the most susceptible to the disease and were the first type of fish that were discovered with it (hence the name).

There is no proven or likely cure. All infections are fatal.

It is fatal and doesn't just infect tetras.

From what I've been reading it needs to be treated like TB. Euthanize all fish, throw the filters out, strip tank, 50% bleach eveything.

Pretty nasty.

Crap, that may be a little extreme. I had an outbreak of NTD that wiped out the tetras but the Angel Fish were fine for over a year. I had to move and gave up the Angels, but I never saw any symptoms.

Please don't euthanize all the fish. Give them a chance. I had angel fish, rainbows, and cories that never contracted the disease that killed all the neons.

At least wait and see what happens.

Yes, Watcher, IMO you are correct and I don't know what happened to the rest of my comments. I did a post and edit and the edit didn't go through. It's happened to me before. Sometimes it lags and nothing happens.

Anyhow, I wouldn't give up on the fish so fast. The neons, yes, I would euthanize them and any other fish that shows signs of NTD. Wait a few weeks after the last signs of NTD before you add any new fish.

If, when you add new fish to your tank, they begin to show signs, then you might want to consider that all your fish may be "carrying" the disease and go the TB route.

any one ever see it effecting guppies? my tetras are definitely sick, i have the quarantined now and i only have 1 adf in the main tank which has had a complete water change. i dont think it is ntd, its a brand new tank and i think thats why theyre dyin off. i have put the 2 guppies back in with the frog in case anotehr tetra dies and they get exposed. what u think?the guppies arent really showing any signs of ich(like the tetras had) one of their tails is looking a bit dodgy but im guessing just from all the moving around
