I just wanted to give the warning out about this stuff. I had added sand to my aquarium and I had obviously not washed it too well, so I added a tetra clarifier to help clear it up. It didn't do much for my water, but it did clump the particles and caught them in my fish's gills. They are now almost dead as they float around with the water current with clumped particles haging out of their gills. :eek3::eek::mad2::22_yikes::tombstone: So sad...I had these since they were babies. Just wanted to give everyone the heads up.

In swimming pools, it's called flocculent & clumps the cloudy water particulates so they can be vacuumed up. I think it's the same idea for tanks.

I don't think so.

I wouldn't classify sand as small particles.

The dust from the sand would be. Personally I would not use any "clarifier" in a tank but have in the pool. It made a kind of thin mucus-like yuck in the bottom but did help the pool finally.

I'm sorry for your problems, fishieperson. I know they're not the same but the pool stuff seemed to "unclump" after a while. Try some water changes, it may help. With sand I use a small diameter gravel vac & hose.

I did an immediate 75% water change and removed the dead fish, and cleaned the clarifier out of the cartridge. The water is crystal clear and some of my fish lived through it.

I didn't want sand to get clumped together, I didn't rinse all of the debris out of it well enough (or as well as I thought I had) and it clouded up my water. I like Tetra AquaSafe, and since it was made by the same company as my filter, I though I would give it a try. From now on, I am only going to use CrystalClear, if I have to that is. I caught my little cousin pouring the whole bottle in my 10 gallon and it never caused any problems. It turned the water orange, but that was it. A whole bottle treats 400 gallons, so that was 40x overboard. No harm done.

It says directly on the bottle "Safe for fish and plants". Yeah right.... Maybe I should file a complaint with Rosemary, the supervisor at TetraCare. Not much can be done, though.
