The Gas Game

If you break it down, the oil companies aren't making all that much per gallon of gas. They're making something like $0.08/gal after refining, etc. The Fed. Government, makes about $0.59/gallon. Repeal that gas tax and we'd all be driving with cheap gas.

$3.15ish for regular and diesel around here.
So true! The margins for the oil companies per unit gallon sold are very, very tight. They make about 100 times less per pound of product than Dell does in selling computers (another tight-margined industry).

Also, if one lives on either of the coasts of America, the state gas taxes are rather considerable. I last paid $2.69 for regular, here in OK. The specific energy of the fuel makes a small difference in the "apparent" price...using gas from CITGO, I get about 50 more miles per fill-up (about 16 U.S. gallons) than from other brands, so their gas, which is reasonably priced to begin with, is actually less expensive. Getting 370 miles in purely city driving from a less-than-aerodynamic and somewhat heavy minivan on that amount of "go-juice" is kind of surprising.

 what do folks who own hot rods do arround there?! My 280 z takes midgrade, and my Firebird 91 octane or HIGHER.
Go to the airport and fill up with 100LL (100 octane, low lead).

Well, we used to do that when I lived in Cali...first, you'll kill your catalytic converter. Second, it's a bit more expensive ($3.80/gal as of 9 May in No Cal, which actually is not a bad price for this). :(

If gas were priced for what its worth (i.e., all the money we spend to secure energy markets, fighting wars for it, foreign assistance, blah blah), it'd probably run in the double digits in dollars per gallon.

At any rate, it's nice to know we are paying such a fair price for gas...

I wonder if the price went up to, say... $4.89 a gallon, then leveled off at, say.. $3.79 a gallon, everyone would understand.

Sometimes, you have to wonder...

Fair or not, it sure is going to change the way we engineer cars and public transpo!

Most people find it hard to feel sorry for the guy who buys a Dodge Ram 1500 truck for commuting near Chicago only to hear him complain on CNN about gas prices, and how he has to borrow his girlfriend's Toyota. Oh, the horror...he was a "manly man" in his truck, but now he has to hang his head in shame to drive a well-engineered, fuel-efficient, reliable car.

Hey, they're giving out $0.15/gal coupons in my local area. That puts regular, at today's price, at $2.59/gal.

The Gas Game!

It's nice to know the refineries are fixed, and --- the Summer fuel "change-over" happened so smoothly.
And now we have GAS prices back to "normal" again - just like 2 years ago.... ! WoooHooo ! YeeeeHaaww!

I only wish....here taxes are about $0.40/L....so about $1.54/gallon.

Here in Calgary, the gas prices at the moment range (in US$ per US gallons):

$3.38/G to $3.80/G for regular.

over here we only have the higher quality 95 and 97 octane fuels but when i was driving to work this morning it was at 101.9 pence a litre so thats around $8 a gallon.

Prices in our country are at an all time high i think.

PHP 43.00 / liter (octane 93)
PHP 162.77 / gallon if I converted right..

so in your currency its something like US$ 3.11 / gallon

When I started driving 5 years ago, the price was about US$ 1.185 / gallon

I don't even bring my car to work anymore. I ride the train ;)

North Carolina has some of the highest gas tax in the country. Not sure exactly what it is right now, but I believe in the thirty to forty cent range. However, at the moment I've seen Reg 85 at 2.91, and gas stations just up each additional gas ten cents. Driving to FLA Friday to visit Mom--I'll rack up the dollars as I own a "farm" truck (with horses, getting up hay, hauling all kinds of stuff, it's a must so I don't whine about driving to work, and being a woman certainly don't have to be a "manly man" -- or woman LOL. That's life.
