Has anyone heard of this? I think I remember hearing about it in elementary school but I just watched a show on it and I am disgusted with human kind right now. I cannot believe we would do such a thing! There is not only 1, but 5 of these things!

The largest of the 5 being called the Gyre. It is the largest landfill... floating in the middle of our beautiful ocean.

Here are a couple sites on it that could explain it way better then I ever could

Been in the news for a good long time and is often on different documentaries for various reasons. Yep, we are a wasteful, sorry lot. If we can pollute the Pacific in an area twice as large as the state of Texas, it speaks poorly of our sense of duty to our planet.

don't forget the atlantic is up and coming... have you guys heard of the beaches that've been closed one at a time year by year in new york and new jersey lately? i believe the last time was because of used hypodermic needles washing up on shore. it's only a matter of time before all of our waterways are just waste collection swamps. if there were not organisms that could survive such conditions long after we're gone i'd say humanity is going to single handedly kill every species of animal life on the earth. but alas there will be some that survive and we will have only succeeded in eliminating most animals including ourselves. the time is coming and most are doing little to nothing to stop it.

As a nation, we are far more wasteful than many others. Corporations pollute far more in the name of business than anyone and simply apply for a waiver to allow the waste to go into the water ways.

Beaches are routinely closed here due to sewage waste, needles and medical waste, and many other non-natural occurrences.

Eh whats it matter. The oceans are so big that we couldn't possibly do anything to effect it. You guys are nuts to think that people can effect the environment be it water or air.

Well thats what they'd say isn't it?

yes. i blame the americans.
well. not really. it's not just america. there is a LOT of pollution coming from japan, hong kong, china, that whole area of the world where they have looser regulations and no one really enforces them. we, humans in general, need to find a better way to package things that isn't so wasteful and a better way to deal with our waste. there are still a lot of small towns that don't recycle plastics or anything other than paper or glass. where i live you can only recycle paper, and glass. like, what about all the other stuff? EVERYTHING comes in plastic and yet so little of it is actually recycled. what a waste.

Utterly disgusting! Colbert had the man who discovered the patch on his show last night. Something needs to be done about this, now! I never let anything I bring to a beach, river, etc. into the water, unless it's a camera or what I'm wearing, and it always comes back out with me. I make it a rule to clean up an area every time I'm near a water system too, but the amount of crap others have put in the water is overwhelming.

Gojira actually wrote a song about this
