About once a month, I turn off my filters. For some reason this makes all the little bugs and worms come out of my substrate and reach for the sky. At which point, my fish have a field day on them. I love watching my female Betta chase down the little white bug-things that zigzag around the tank. An hour later, I turn the filters on again. Is this normal to have that many creatures in your tanks? My water is good and I'm heavily planted. Ive been doing this for years... Never lose fish to dirty water or anything.

Fairly normal, yes. Most tanks have a large number of microfauna, but they just aren't visible during normal operations, based on their own size and the tendency of most fish to snack on them. If they are, it's a sign of a problem--ie, overfeeding that is supporting a huge population. Personally, I like the diversity!
