Why on Earth would someone fake being a foreigner? Some people need to find better things to do with their time!!

Lol...Bitsy...we call people like this trolls, and yes we get them like that here. We had one pretending to be living in Norway with her new hubby, who also posted....and ocasionally her "evil twin" (yes, those words were used) would "steal" her computer...all the way in Norway mind you. She's tried to come back as several other people too...also....she was herself, her "hubby" and her "evil twin"...

I have to admit the AIM style of typing kind of bugs me. Maybe it shouldn't but it does because I have to read things over to understand what the heck they mean. There was a post the other day that went like this....

$250 for a 125gal?
used rite?
if it is then tat would make sense
no way would a 125 gal cost tat much new
i should no tat.
i have been into over hundreds of stores
I was going to reply 'I tawt I taw a puddy tat' :D but didn't want to hurt the guys feelings.

Well heres the thing. I CHOOSE to use proper grammar on these boards, because I know that proper releying of information on this type of website is very important, creatures lives depend on what information you give. I also know that I'm in the company of adults, and I write accordingly. Given that, if I'm just chatting with one of my friends, grammar isn't as high as a priority as getting the information off as easily as possible. Even if I mispell a word, I don't correct it unless I butchered it. If my freind can get the meaning of what I'm trying to say, then communication has achieved its purpose.

 Perfectly put. Same for me.

I don't mind if someone uses bad grammar/spelling/AIM slang as long as I can understand them.

Chatting with your friends is where to use the AIM chat and lingo. Thanks for making the effort to be understandable!!! I bet you get more questions answered and people listen when you have something to say.
And typos...well we all have our share of those now don't we :D

I always look over my posts just to make sure I didn't make a typo. (notice the spacing away from the period, thats for you Leopardess, see I learned something. We didn't have typing classes at my school. Well we did but only the chicks took it.) I might still miss a few, but thats because I'm use to speed reading. They even include a preview post for this reason. I choose not to use it, I end up just going back and doing an edit of the post if I see a mistake.

I'm not bashing anyone. We all are going to make mistakes. The original post was more about the future and not the forum per se.

Some schools teach kids to spell Phonetically.....in the lower grades. They don't focus so much on proper spelling as they do on whether or not it "Looks" right phonetically.

That's in the lower grades.......some kids just never catch on after that and never learn to spell correctly.....

I work in a school......the self esteem thing has some to do with it as well....Gosh ! don't correct a kid's spelling...he/she might feel bad about themselves !!

It's a cultural thing......less focus on excellence...because that would leave some folks out.....more focus on uniformity..that way EVERYOne's included and no ones left out...it's easier to fail than it is to succeed..so lets all fail together, than we can all feel good that no one is left out.

makes perfect sense to me....

BTW....typos..no problem......happens to all of us...shortcuts such as IMO, UGF and the like...fine why type all that out when an acronym will do......but how on earth can you fill out a job application and expect to actually get hired....if you can't spell correctly ? Proper spelling may not be necessary here or on any other forum or chat site...but it is important in the real world !

god why dont you change the spelling mistakes as when im at school and my teacher does not change the mistakes i think thats how they spell the word. and why would it lower the self esteem well its the childs own fault we have to learn some day so i say you should change the spelling if its wrong.

The way you write your posts speaks to your literary level...that is your ability to convey your thoughts accurately, and your ability to understand what's being told to you. A very clear, articulate, and well-written article can include a few mistakes and typos that are easily overlooked. When every word is poorly chosen, misspelled, and out of order...you're going to be talked to like a baby because it's obvious that's all you can understand.

For those who don't speak/read/write English fluently, this can be forgiven, just as (in my limited international experience) foreigners will forgive those of us who don't speak their language for inconsistencies, poor articulation, diction, pronunciation, and everything else...at least they will if they want to deal/interact with us.

Main point in any form of communication is getting your ideas and thoughts clearly understood by the other party. Local groups will form dialects, and have words, phrases, and abbreviations that only make sense to those groups till explained elsewhere. The same now extends to online groups. In order to clearly communicate, we must all start on the same sheet. The best way to do this is to use standard language without excessive usage of local and online dialects that aren't common to the one we're speaking to. We must make that conscious effort to keep our language appropriate for the forum we're speaking in, whether (weather? :-P) it be the local Parent Teacher's Association meeting, the fish club, the mason's guild monthly meeting, drinking with your friends, private email, or public fish forum. As the Army's publications on writing and communication state: "100% accuracy isn't the goal. The goal is effective communication."

As far as the education system goes, I agree that this babying psyche's of children needs to stop. I agree that parents need to be involved in educating their children. These are just my thoughts, and as I'm not planning on getting into education, there's little I can do other then support those who support these ideals.
