Planning to put a nano (3g) tank in my room, and I am wondering what filter out there is the quietest filter I can get (since I will be sleeping with the filter on in the same room, I want it to be as silent as possible)
The tank will be lightly stocked with cherry shrimp and plants only.

At this size, I think the capacity wouldn't matter much. Most starter filter rated for up to 10g should be more than enough. (I am looking at Aquaclear 10, Tetra Whisper 10, Aqueon, Penguin 100B, and maybe the red sea deco nano filter <i am afraid this one might be too small for 3 g)
I am also considering using sponge filter as I heard they are better for shrimp tank. However, I already have a tetra whisper 10 air pump and I found it quite noisy in my room.

Any suggestion appreciated!

you do know that this is a three gallon, not a 30. Those above might be a little overkill.

Besides, my Smart Filter was a little noisy for me, my quiet1 1200 pump is quieter, although, agian, that is by far overkill.

For a three gallon, you could try this, probably very quiet too. http://www.petfrd.com/forum/articles.php?action=viewarticle&artid=87

That DIY Canister would work...but for a 3g shrimp tank I'd find the quietest air pump I could get, Wrap it in a town beside my desk (I found this was the easiest way to keep any remaining noise down) and use a sponge filter...

but then you have to deal with bubbles inside the water, rising and splashing and all that rucus.

I never found bubbling water to be loud...but then again I put one of those needle valves on the line and tuned it to about half what it would have pumped otherwise. I didn't find it any worse/louder then a humming powerhead (submersible pump) or running AC/fan...but then again, people say I'm deaf.

As for the rinsing/cleaning/refreshing the media...you'd hafta do that with a canister as well.

I have never used internal filter, are they generally more quiet compare to power HOB filter? (Ignoring the splashing water sounds since I will fill the water level up)
For example, "whisper 10 HOB filter" vs "whisper I 10 Internal filter", which one will likely produce less noise?
