I have a 70L (18gal?) which is reasonably heavily planted, that currently houses 3 male Guppies, 4 female Betta's, 10 Neons and 2 Albino Cory's.

One of my Betta's, the prize centrepiece fish no less, is rather ill with some sort of gill rotting parasite, so may not be around much longer :( The other three girls are there only in a support role for her, so if she goes, they will be rehomed also. Eventually, the Guppies will end up in an outdoor pond with a couple of females, to spend their remaining days breeding to their little hearts' content.

So. I'd like to get me a couple of Angels. Although I'm fairly familiar with Angels in general, I know very little about the various strains of these fish, which one's are more aggressive, which to avoid or avoid mixing together etc, so I'm keen to learn. Would it be at all possible, providing I introduced them at a very young age, to keep just two or possibly three in a tank this size, with the remaining inhabitants? Could I keep just males? Could I keep just one fish alone, without any drama's??

A note, if you will, any reference to particular strains will need some sort of colour or appearence reference, until I get a handle on this. Thanks heaps :)

I would steer clear of black angels. For some reason they seem more fragile. You could keep quite a few in a tank that size too (given you remove the other fish).I would however try to figure out what is ailing your little betta before giving up on it.As for keeping males, you could but they are hard to sex until maturity.Oh and i would add a schooling fish with the angels but nothing that will fit in its mouth.I think some rummynose would look good.As for your corys they really like the company of each other and i would bump there numbers quite a bit, at least 10-15 IMO.Hope this helps.Good Luck!

Hey fishy it is an 18 gal not a 70 gal. I think only one angel. I have heard that the black angels are the hardest as well. My marbles seem really hardy. My Sunset Blusher seem so too, but they look delicate.

I would hesitate putting even a single angel in there with alone, let alone with anything else. Have a look at a Pearl Gourami instead, I think the angel would get a bit too big and would also eat the neons.

I have a 35gal hex that houses 2 Koi Angels, 2 Albino Coris, 1 Betta & one lil tiny glass cleaner dude and about 4 guppies are kept for snacks.
My Angels are not full grown yet... hopefully they wont outgrow the space.

Just watch that the angels do not become aggressive towards each other as they grow (or if they pair up aggressive towards anything that moves in the tank). The betta also may possibly become aggressive towards the angels, and you should add 4 more cories if you can as they like to be in groups. I have 8 and they are always playing around together.

an 18 is on the small end for angels. usually recommended to have at least a 20..but larger is better as angels can get large.

there are 3 known species of angels
P. Altum is the largest and also the hardest to keep they seem to suffer from captivity and transport. nearly all Altum are Wild caught as they are very difficult to breed in captivity.

P. Scalare is the most common of the angels. there are many color varients(strains) these are know to breed prolifically in captivity and most available are domestically raised. these can also get fairly large.

P.Leopoldi is the last known species. it is the smallest of the Angels and can be quite beligerant.
remember Angels are Cichlids and can become aggressive.
you need to choose tank mate wisely. as small tetras tend to wind up as expensive snacks.

btw, in a tank with a betta I'd put my money on the Angel.

My Angels are a pair. Got them from my mom.. she had 2 pair together & this older 2 I got were terrorizing her smaller pair.. so I adopted the bullies.
The bettas been in there quite awhile now & had no issues.... yet..lol.
I noticed as long as the feeder guppies are in there that the Angels tend to spend most of their time stalking them..
