Cops: Teens Broke Into Aquarium to Torture Sharks
Wednesday, November 10, 2004
Associated Press

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Four young teens have been arrested after the torture and killing of two sharks (search) and a ray at a California aquarium.

Vandals broke into the Aquarium of the Pacific (search) in Long Beach Sunday night. When aquarium staff arrived Monday, they found debris in the shark tank and the cow-nose ray (search) on the concrete pool deck.

A two-foot-long, striped bamboo shark was found dead in a bird exhibit and a three-foot-long nurse shark was found in the bushes. They had been stabbed or poked with plastic pipes.

An aquarium spokeswoman says the staff was "all very sickened" by what happened.

Police say three 13-year-olds and one 14-year-old were arrested while trying to break into the aquarium a second time Monday night. They're being held on suspicion of animal cruelty and trespassing.

sounds like they just tried to feed them to the birds.
Its unfortunate for the animals and aquarium, but it takes a lot more to sicken me.

To me it sounds as though the kids poked the fish to extract them from the tanks, they probably had a very difficult time with the ray thus leaving it on the floor. Then the birds wouldn't eat them. I can see how an animal activist could get up in arms about this, but to me its not the end of the world.
I think the breaking and entering would be the far more serious offense.

If these kids had stepped on 3 crickets nobody would care...
or if they had tossed 3 goldfish into a birdcage...

it seems there is a double standard for any animal greater than 6" in length...

What's more disturbing to me is the identified relationship between the abuse of animals and the tendency to abuse people. When I was robbed, I was really worried that some of my animals might have been harmed (none were) by the robbers. I was mad about being robbed, but I would have been much angrier had they hurt my pets.

If I were the parent of one of these kids, they'd be heading for some serious therapy in addition to restitution for the damage they caused.

they are so stupid to try and break in AGAIN
Being raised in Modern Surburbia will do that to you. I shudder when I think of all the bored and apathetic pre-and teenagers in our town. They're apt to do anything for some entertainment.

Oh, yes, I'm aware. I'd pay it, and apologize, and then my kid would be working to pay me back. Relying on the child to pay for this damage would result in no payments being made--and I will not rely on the court system to force them. So, I'd pay for it, and then make sure my child repaid every penny, plus interest. I once had a car roll into the barn. A total accident, the parking brake slipped when I got out to close the garage door. The cost of removing and repairing my car came out of my pocket. My mom paid to have the barn repaired--and then charged me $75 a month until I repaid the cost of that repair plus interest. At the time, I felt picked on, but it was totally fair.

What if some one were to do the same in your home with you tanks? What if they did the same thing at a kennel with some pups or kittens, would you say the same thing? It is the end of the world if we cant control our young.
