I went into petsmart the other day to buy an oscar or two for my 55g aquarium. I used to have some tetras in there but they were boring so i gave them to my brother. anyways i asked the girl how big they got and she asked me if i wanted to see a couple of big ones. she took me in the back and there was a red oscar and an albino one in a big plastic box. she then asked me if i wanted them. i asked her how much and she said they were free because a guy dropped them off because he didn't want them anymore.

So now i've got these two huge fish in my aquaium that i didn't pay a dime for. they seem to be doing alright. they just follow one another around the tank all day. i thought this was awesome and i'm very happy about it.
:D :D :D :D :D :D

They found a happy home! That's nice. I am fortunate to have a great store here who takes extremely good care of their fish. I butted into a conversation with a guy drying to unload his 14'' catfish onto the store but they would not take it. Too big and too difficult to sell. This is happening all the time, they said. If you want big mature fish for your tank I bet if you put in a want ad at your local news paper you'd get a few calls from people wanting to get rid of them for cheap.. or free.

There's no doubt that free is always good :D but I'm afraid you will end up regretting it unless you get a tank large enough to house them.

yeah, theres a reason the other guy got rid of 'em

Let me just say that it's nice you gave those fish a home but you may regret it in the near future. How big exactly are these Oscars? You see, I have an Oscar (use to have 2) and he just moved into his very OWN 50 gallon breeder tank with a 75 gallon filter on it. These fish get HUGE and to top things off they are very MESSY.

The recommended MINIMUM size tank for just ONE Oscar is 50-55 gallons. If you get 2 of them that means you need a MINIMUM 100 gallon tank but more idealy a 120-150 gallon. Now, depending on their ACTUAL size you may be able to get away with having the 2 of them in a 55 together for a short time. If they are already over say 8-10 inches each then they are too big to be in a 55 together. If left in a small tank togwther the water quality is going to go downhill fast and your fish are going to start suffering. You may start to see HITH disease and or fin/tail rot. You'll also begin to notice the fish resting most of the time and hardly swimming. That's one of the first things I notice with my O. The loss of his tankmate was secondary, since I didn't catch onto the problem soon enough.

So, even though you got your fish for free, they may end up costing you several hundred dollars anyway. If I were you I'd take them back or at least take 1 of them back. You could keep 1 Oscar in your 55 but he'd have to be by himself ... you might be able to get away with 1 O and a pictus cat or pleco in there but not 2 Os. Good luck. Sorry to be the bearer of rotten news but I'd hate to see you loose both fish because of poor water conditions.
