Has anyone heard of this filter system? I have seen it used on a large pred tank w/ an eel, but what exaclty are they, how do they work, do they work, and are they the most efficient?

thank you.

Tidepool is a Marineland product and is essentially a wet/dry that utilizes a large bio-wheel instead of bio-balls. I got one on clearance a little while back, but haven't put it to use yet (I'm actually wanting to put it on a fw tank, not a sw tank).

Here's the manufacturer's page on the Tidepool:

I like the design of them...removable trays without messing with the intake hose. Long sump section....easily converted into a refugium. I'd like to have one to replace my Proclear wet/dry.

BlackwolfxKAV,

I am currently running a Tidepool II on my 75 gal FOWLR tank. I am running it with the SOS overflow box(another Marineland product) since my tank is not RR. I think they would be a good choice for a predator system. You can run a vast array of media in the three separate trays. I currently just have mine stocked with blue filter pads and filter floss. It is easy to pull the pads out and change them as needed. I'll probably try to change this to a refugium when I go with a reef which will be easy to do but right now I'm really happy with the Tidepool. Did you have any specific questions about the filter?

Can you explain all the abbreviation? Also, what is the difference between a "regular" tidepool and a tidepool II? Lots of questions, but most go along the lines of how, what and most importantly, why?

Thank you,
B.W.

Sorry, FOWLR=Fish only with Live Rock. RR=Reef Ready(drilled tank w/ overflow).SOS=Model name of my overflow box.

The difference between the Tidepool I and II. The I is narrower and made for 40-100 gallon tanks. The II is a little wider and made for 65-120 gallon tanks. If you set up your predator tank I would go with the II just make sure to allow for the width under your tank when you get the stand. You will need an overflow box if the tank you get is not already reef ready. The overflow is gravity driven but you will need a submersible pump in the filter to return water to the tank from the filter. The bio wheel is supposed to house additional aerobic bacteria to help the nitrifying process. If it works or not I do not know since I have 1 pound of live rock per gallon in my tank.I do like the possibility of converting it to a refugium which is one reason I got it. Also, I like the aeration of the water factor and the ease of being able to add any type of fliter media(carbon, polyfilter, phosban, etc.) needed.
