I am thinking about getting some tiger barbs for my 20 gallon.

Will the different varieties still school together in 1 group? (ex, albino, normal striped color, green)

yes they will

tiger barbs in my opinion are best kept in a species only tank because they bully everything
i had 3 tiger barbs literally gang beat a rainbow shark

Sort of. Tiger barbs have the primary school. Then they divide from there into smaller groups when not all swimming together. When you have multiple types they'll swim together for the prmary school. When the primary school splits it'll split by type. Basically if you have normals and albnos they'll swim together but rather then sub-dividing by ranking they'll split into a normal sub-group and an albino sub-group. Not sure how that corresponds to social structure, since they'll swim with everything that has a similar look (ie: clown loaches). They may or may not consider the other fish actually part of their social structure. For that one would have to ask them.

But your main problem is tank size.

They will be alone with my crayfish Rocky, he is pretty timid. He hides in his cave in the day but "walks" around at night. ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1339300848.715652.jpg ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1339300861.832710.jpg

How many should I get?

I've had a small school of zebra-danios for a few days, nobody has been injured...

Don't worry, they are on loan from my brother, who is re-setting up his tank

If not tiger barbs, I would get cherry barbs...

Crayfish are best left in a species only tank.

Still...tiger barbs may pick at the crayfish, and the smaller ones may get picked at by the crayfish.

Cherry barbs may get snapped at by the crayfish as well.

Crayfish are hard to find tank mates for. Most people will just keep them in a small tank on their own (from what I can remember) simply because they just don't play well with others.

I guess Rocky will have a 20 gallon to himself :) (he has already made himself a cave with sand)

Well I wouldn't get too hast and not utilize all that space...go out and get a standard 5 gal tank and put him in there. Maybe a 10 if you can afford it.
