Okay, our new tank has been stocked with African Cichlids for almost 3 weeks now. We started with 5 fish. One, named Tigger, due to the stripes got really round a few days ago. Anyway, he turned out to be a she.

My wife caught her laying a few eggs late last nite. I'm trying to learn up on their breeding habits. But, a few pointers would be great.

So, she laid the eggs in open water I believe then quickly moved them to her mouth. I'm hoping she didn't eat them. From what I heard, my wife said she was holding on to them.

Are the eggs already fertilized? I'm pretty much clueless to the basics of their cycle and how it typically works.

Any insight?

Thanks,
Jason

I doubt the eggs are fertilized. What type of african cichlids do you have? Many are mouth brooders. The females lay eggs, then the male fertilizes them then the female picks them up and holds them for about 3-4 weeks. They don't eat at all during this time.
Since it doesn't sound like there was a male around I don't think the eggs are fertilized. She might hold them for a couple days but eventually will swallow them.

Is Tigger silvery blue? Sounds like kenyi, especially considering how common they are. With kenyi female are pale blue with stripes and the males are yellow and sometimes show stripes.
The one in my picture is a demasoni. A dwarf mbuna that only gets to be 3-4 inches but has a huge attitude. Kenyi can also be very very aggressive.

Here's a picture of a Kneyi female and male. They can be more or less blue depending on genetics, lighting and stress level.

Metriaclima heteropictus

That's the one she most resembles so far. The tan/peachy ones with a hint of blue on her gills. Sorry!!! My description by memory was pretty terrible. Not as white as I was thinking. But, she as become the most aggressive and touchy now...at least towards her 4 buddies.

Thanks for help!!

Those are really pretty fish too, in your pic.

Hmm I'm not familiar at all with that species and a google search didn't show much besides Metriaclima sp msobo. But those have yellow females and don't have stripes. Perhaps a picture would help me ID her.

There is also the possibility of being a hybrid.
