Here in IL it's still to early to even think about your pond, but I expect with the warmer temps it's just a matter of time before someone comes in asking questions. It's our advice not to do any BIG cleaning in the spring for several reasons and I'll just ask for what everyone else thinks. I've never had a pond myself. The first thing everyone wants to do is empty the pond and completely clean it in the spring. Then they can't figure out why they have green water and dead fish in late May. I'm still waiting for a big snowstorm yet, but today it's 60 degrees and stormy. What kind of spring is everyone else having?

Can't wait for the spring... I'm dieing to get out and clean up the pond. I have another one planned for the front yard this year. I have one customer installation lined up and hopefully a few others coming in the pipeline. I have a few spring cleanups scheduled as well. I just ordered a pondovac 3 and it should be here in a day or two. It reached a high of 34 today and it's snowing outside right now. Ugh... I hate March.

I think that it's very important to clean the pond out in the spring and the reason for this is due to the debris which is at the bottom of the pond from the year before. Now, if the pond has no stones in the bottom and no debris then cleaning out the pond in the spring is not necessary. Just make a good water change from the bottom of the pond to remove the excess toxins and replace with freshwater and a water conditioner to get the pond ready for the spring.

If you find that your pond is always green and you can clear it, make your own biological filter. It's really very easy and takes little maintenance. Check out our clubs website at: www.geocities.com/ont_pondkeper and make your own.
