You have to let your tank cycle (create benefitial bacteria and it's food). Basically you need to have something in there to create ammonia (you have fish already, you have ammonia). If not, look up fishless cycling, there are stickies in this forum, but a google search will work to get you lots of info...plus there are a few threads on here realated to white, cloudy water and cycling.

once you create ammonia, you have to wait for bacteria grow and colonize. They are going to create nitrite with their waste, which is in turn consumed and turned into nitrate. Once that is completed you're set.

Get a test kit that includes tests for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. then you know how much of this you have. After reading more detailed stuff on cycling, you'll see what the numbers mean.

Get prepared to do some water changes if you have fish in there.
