my answer is yes!!!!! most people will tell you no. #1 if you do you will require more maint in your tank. these boogers get big and love to wrestle as you already know so they will get in scuffles and up root your plants but not very often. like you might fined one plant out of place every week or so. #2 they will eat your soft leafed plants. thats what i have experience and thats what every one will tell you. i have a remade for this problem. always have a supply of soft leaf veggies in your tank on a clip. if your cheep you can use a chip clip. they will eat the leafs you put in there over the plants but dont forget to put in in there or death to your nice green plants. i just lost one this week i have 3 red tailed barbs that are large size. didnt put any thing in there for a week and now im left left with an over trimmed root lol. i have had them for 6 months with plants and no problems till i got lazy.
Why don't you just start a different tank for raising plants? It's a risky plan if you have spent much on the plants, why limit yourself on plants that you want to grow? You could also make it into a community tank for peaceful types of fish.
i put peas(shelled), zocinie, spinage leaves, and letuce in there for them to eat. switching intermitently. i put all my prduce in the freezer too keep it good for a long time and it also softens the vegies up for easy eating. pretty much any plant that you can put between your fingers and rub hard and the plant leef dosent fall apart or damage it is going to be a great plant that your fish wont bother. but like i stated earlier if you feed them veggies on a daily basis you can prett much put what ever plant you want in there except for most mosses. the fish cant distuinguish the diffrence between prepared food and the moss.
