tips for making a java moss carpet

See if you can find some sheets of rigid plastic or stainless (better) screening with a bit wider mesh than window screening. Craft stores often carry this type of product.
You can either tie the moss onto it or put it under the screening to hold it in the area you want to grow it in, and it will root into the substrate.
Patience is required as Java moss is very slow to get going, at least for me it was. I used regular, plastic window screening to create a background of moss in my smaller tanks and it was like watching paint dry to see it fill in, but now it's starting to look really nice!!
