if you want to grow plants, do you have to have sun glo bulbs (i think they are 6700 K) or can you have an aqau glo and a power glo (both around the 20 000 K range)?

IM not a big fan of the “branded” bulbs, but that’s just the communist in me :D

In a word… no its not ok to run 20,000K bulbs for a light source, they wont hurt the plants, but at the same extent they wont do much of anything for them either; I would suggest something in the 6000-10000 range specifically for the plants…

6700k is ideal for plants, there are mixed opinions on anything above 10000k, most people advise against it.

what kind of plants? unless you have a very small tank(or many bulbs), those wont be sufficient for anything other than very low light plants like java fern / anubias / moss.

Go with compact instead, and get it right the first time. coralife sells some very nice aqualights strips for planted. ahsupply.com has the best diy lighting.
