The 15w incandescent bulb that came with our 5 gal tank went kaput. I was able to find a very skinny 11w cf light but when I put it in the hood... WOW.. is that bright. The fish and plants look much nicer with the brighter light, but could it be too much? I've got some plastic floating plants (fry hideouts) that block some of the light.

The amount of lighting you have is fine. All of my current plant tanks have slightly more than 3 watts of lighting per gallon of water.

That said, what kind of setup are you running for your plants? CO2 injection? What kind of fertillizing routine?

golfnfish - cf light appears much more bright. The color temperature is probably also different.

At 2wpg you are not really in high light terratory and can grow things without much trouble (low- intermediate light) , you also don't really have to worry too much about CO2 or fertilizing yet.

If you intend to do well with plants , look into getting flourite for substrate , DIY yeast CO2 and one of the commercial ferts (Tropica, Seachems ,etc)

However if your question is soley about the light, you are fine.
