too much light?

i have a new tank 20 long with a all glass 30 inch hood (17 w bulb.) i have 5 black skirt tetra (been in tank 3 days). when the light is on fish run for cover and lose there color. lights out they are beautiful black and school. No live plants) is this light to intense because of the shallow depth of this tank or is it this fish? fish are no very pleasureable if they are in a cave or hiding when light is on.Btw ihave kept fish before even this species with no light fright.

have a penguin 200 filter on this tank and man is it clear.

try keeping the light on for a longer period of time.. they should adjust to you new schedual

they are justing getting used to the tank. thats not very much light. how long do you keep the lights on? are they on a timer?

timer 7am - 11 am. and again 5pm- 11 pm.

My timer is set for 7 am until 9 pm. Should I be considering changing it? The bulbs I have in the tank are these energy saving ones:

If you're tank is fairly new, it's probaly a little bare. They're probably just feeling like we would feel if we were in a brightly lit room with just a coat rack and chair. If you get some more decor like some fake plants or driftwood, or something they can swim in or around they'll probably be more curious and active. HTH!

i have 3 fake plants, i big lean to piece of slate in front corner. and two caves of slate. when lights come on they go straight for these hideouts and basically hover just off the bottom.

definetly lengthen the time your lights are on..they are not use to that little light. 8am to 6or7pm is gret, then add some lunar lighting to view their activity at night.

If you try leaving the lights on longer but you are still having trouble getting them to come out so you can view them the I have to agree with jerzsky on getting some lunar lights. You can get some that you can just plug in on ebay for not very much. Or if you are more handy then they have some you can assemble yourself for even less money.
