I got a 5 gallon all glass aquarium from a x-ray student that I used to work with about a yr. and half ago for free, it's in great shape and I have a female betta in it at this moment. My issue is I want a top for it, most places around here do not sell 5 gallon tanks anymore they are usually 5.5 and the dimensions are different for the glass top. My dimensions that would work are 7 3/4 wide and 13 3/8 long aprox., does anyone know of any website to get a glass top for these tanks. My only other option would be to go to Home depot or Lowes and buy some acrylic sheets and cut it to fit the tank, then I would have to cut a spot for a filter and heater + make a hole to feed the fish. I really don't want to do this, but I'm sure this will be the cheapest way to go. Also is there any way of connecting two long pieces in the middle so as to open it up instead of having to take it off each time? I also know I can get a 2.5 gallon light for around 11.00 to go on top, it would be about 1" to short on both ends but I'm not concerned about that, or I could go and find a shop light--not sure which would be more economical. Any suggestions wuld be appreciated, Thanks.

Basing this on your desire to NOT do a DIY top. Why not just buy a new hood? I know you said you cant find one that will fit, but around here you can get a tank that would fit the new hood for under $10.

Then it would just be a matter of moving all of your existing equipment, water, plants and substrate, and your fish to the new tank. Using your existing stuff should not cause a new cycle I wouldnt think.

I am still new to all this, so maybe, if you're interested in going this route, someone will confirm or condemn this.

Just a thought.

Is your female betta a known jumper? If not, then there isn't really a need for a top. You can try to find a way to mount a light fixture over the tank, or just buy a desk lamp with a PC bulb or one that will take a PC bulb.
