I will be bringing home several fish from out of town (110 miles away) its cold here, real cold, what do I do to make sure there going to make the trip? I was thinking cooler....... very warm car...... insulating the cooler with towels. and closing the lid to make sure there not frightened. does this sound ok?

once home I put the bags in the tank,( quarinteen tank) let float for 30 minutes. add tank water slowly over the course of the 30 minutes. then let fish go.... shut tank lights off for the day?

sounds fine, you could also pick up a hand warmer to put in the cooler (not against the bags though). Don't introduce the pet store water into your tanks, dump the fish into a net and then put them in the tank. I may also be tempted to acclimate a little longer since the store is so far and their water conditions could vary from yours. I would add a small amount of water every 15minutes until the volume is at least doubled.

thank you !! good info :)

I've have stores give me the styrofoam boxes they get fish shipped to them in, or you can just bring your own cooler. Make sure its at least room temp or warmer in the car, put hte bags in, shut it up tight and you should be fine. The only reason you might want towels is to keep the bags from rolling around if the cooler is too big. You can ask the store if they'll give you a heatpack as well, one place near me will do that if its cold and they know you're driving more than 30-40min.

yup , agree, cooler(btw you can prewarm a cooler and it will help the cooler sustain the heat as coolers are really just well insulated boxes)

I would consider drip acclimation if the water the fish are coming from is different from your water. test the ph, gh etc

I have the same problem....long distance from LFS and cold weather. Like star_rider said, prewarm the water. I filled a large plastic bag with near boiling water, tied a knot in it and drove to the fish store. It kept the cooler nice and warm by the time I was ready to put the fish in. Also as said above, I used the towels to steady the bag w/in the cooler. They also kept the fish bag away from the still-very-warm sides of the cooler.

Also keep just enough water in the coolers so they are manageable (half full at most). No use hauling it if you can't lift them.
