I'm settled for good now. But when I was in the Air Force, I moved a lot and tried several methods, including taking the fish with me in the car, and selling them back to the lfs and buying new later after the tanks were set up again.
Taking them with me proved disastrous in spite of my Hurculean efforts. It was just too much time between tearing down the tanks and getting them reset in another part of the country.
Selling and rebuying was ok, but a money-losing proposition. The method that worked best for me was to convince the lfs to hold my fish until I had the tanks established in the new location and then they air freighted them to me. I lost only one small fish out of over 100 total! This way I was able to keep my "friends" with me and healthy. The freight charges were considerable, but worth it, IME.
Of course this requires having a close personal relationship with the lfs. And that's a good idea anyway. I bought all of my fish and equipment from them and became friends with them. Supporting your local small business, whenever possible, is good for all concerned. You may pay more than you would online, but it is worth it for the benefits gained.
I hope this helps.
