I bought 6 trapdoor snails today for my container garden, and was wondering how do you tell if they are alive. All the way home they either stayed in the shell. Also is 5.80 for 6 a good deal? Thanks for your time.

I would just leave them for a while and see if they move. The usual way to see if they have expired seems to be the 'sniff' method, but I'm not sure how well this would work with their trapdoor in place. (Possibly if they have died the trapdoor could be opened easily, but I wouldn't want to try it in case they are OK and you damage them instead.)

I have a trapdoor snail in my aquarium, and sometimes he doesn't move for a day or so. Just when I think I'd better give him a prod and see if he's still alive, I look and he's on the other side of the tank, happily munching algae. :)

I hope yours are OK. They are groovy little fellas! If you can find anything they will eat except algae, I'd be interested in hearing about it - mine walks over algae wafers, and completely ignores any veggies I try in the tank, usually heading in the opposite direction!
