Just thought I toss up a few shots of how I leave a low tech planted tank for two weeks while on business travel.

The weekly fertilizer is set up per day in the pill boxes. My wife drops it in while I'm away. She tends to get busy while I'm gone and just relying on her to drop it in a few times during the week works. Realistically as long as she remembers twice a week it's fine. She just dumps in everything for the previous couple of days. I usually get back and need to do some pruning.

The lights have always been on a timer and I do two water changes (50%) before I go and when I return to reset the tank. uploadfromtaptalk1371421449492.jpg

I've found that using two auto-feeders works. I've tried all sorts but these tend to work the best. Each one contains 1/2 of their normal feeding. If one fails the fish still do just fine for a little while. Generally with these I only have one day get clogged and not feed for the two weeks I'll be gone. Normally due to water being splashed up by an eager fish. I always put fresh batteries into them and make sure they are clean and dry.uploadfromtaptalk1371421415871.jpg

I use pill boxes for my ferts too. Do you have issues with moisture getting in them and clumping the ferts up? I just knock them on the table to loosen them back up, no big deal really. But this seems to be getting worse for some reason. This ever happen to you? Any tips on how to keep it from happening? I keep the ferts on a shelf a few feet away from the tanks.

BTW....... NICE tank!

I live in a lower humidity climate so its not a problem. I also don't is calcium nitrate. It quickly absorbs water from the air. Instead I used calcium sulfate and potassium nitrate.

Great tank!

Yes, beautiful tank!

Just out of curiosity, why the worry about the double automatic feeders? I haven't had to go two weeks, but I've read that fish can easily go two weeks w/out a feeding. Better if you can't keep on on WCs.

They can go two weeks once every few months but not as often as I have to travel during this time of year. I'm normally gone for around half of the weeks from May to November (and working at home most of the winter). That much time and the fish will get really thin and start tearing each other and the plants apart.

The whole tank is designed for low maintenance. Lot's of big plants and very light on the stocking. Only 230W of CFL over the tank as well so the plants grow pretty slow. I change the water for salt buildup only. The longest it's gone is 3 weeks last summer without a water change due to travel. Didn't have any issues.
