I've never had any luck doing it, some bettas can, some can't.
Stay away from fish with similar finnage and coloring. (gourami, fancy guppies, angels, paradise fish, etc.)
I recently added a male betta to my community tank and have no problems at all. The "rules" are fairly simple;
Only one male betta per tank
He still might be aggressive to fish with similar large fins
Bettas are carnivorous and require special food
They are solitary and appreciate foliage etc. to hide in
I hadn't really thought too much about bettas until I aquired this "orphan". Since then I saw some females at the local PETCO and thought them quite attractive. They don't have as much fin as the males but still more than most other fresh water species. Nice color too. They appear to be more community-oriented than males; PETCO had several in a tank along with a couple of other species. I think they are underappreciated and haven't been able to learn much about them. I do know that you can't keep males and females together except briefly for breeding which is a whole other topic.
