i really want to put some good looking fish in the outdoor pond i want to build, i really want cichlids but im okay with mollies and platys and swordtails. anyone got some answers on what i can do?

As long as the temperature doesn't fall below 76 degrees, anything will actually work although I would advise getting the hardy ones such as geos and oscars. Could you please post all your plans?
Oh, if the pond is big enough and the temps are right, a blackwater oscar setup with lots of driftwood would be NEAT.

becareful with temps with most. They did okay until the daytime temperature went to 59 as a high for one day and 30's at night. I had a heater but it failed somewhere in the evening and I had 2 dead pacus and 1 dead oscar an hour later without knowing. I noticed the heater light on and the water was so cold I thought I had shocked my hand cause there was a short in the heater but no short. Just that cold.
I forget the screenname but the person with Brett Farve did a similar project (you can search for the thread) and ultimately ended up scratching the tropical fish part. If I remember correctly, temperatures were the reason.
According to the climate chart for Visalia, CA on Wikipedia, temperature drops well below "tropical levels" during the winter, and so your only chance of sucess would likely be to bring your fish inside before the temperature drops too low.
However, I guess your question was "what can I stock it with" rather than "will this work", in which case I have to agree with Lupin.

the fish will be coming in for the winter, and i thnk im going to go with mollies in stead of a cichlid. and im going to put in some mystery snails and a 12 inch pleco i have, and probably some live plants
