Hi All - I'm putting together all the gear I need to start a nano reef. I was planning on a std 10 gallon aquarium but came across an 8.7 gal. bow front from TruAqua.

Has anyone ever used one of these tanks (or any tank from TruAqua) before?

Specs: 18" x 10.75" x 10.75", 8.7 gals, 3/16 glass. Note that it is shallower and wider than a std 10 gal.

Will the shallower tank be a problem with lighting? I have a dimmer on my LED lighting setup.

Thanks

Yes, I have bought this company before.
I will not go into too much detail, but I can tell you from personal experience and from friends in the business that this is not an ethical company I would never do business with.
Much of what they sell is 2nd rate Chinese products, often infringing upon others designs.

truaqua carries aqua top equipment.there is nothing wrong with the quality of there tanks imo.not sure of what gregg is referring to as far as design infringement.some of their filters are made by another company and rebranded.this is not the same as infringement.the example i am using is the cf 400 uv canister filter.sun sun, gretch and all ponds solution have this filter rebranded.this is all very legal and ethical.how does one prove that it is a 2nd rate chinese product? there are not many us based aquarium companies. i think fluval makes it's filters in the us.hydor also. a lot of people think that fluval is 2nd rate also. i have never had problems with fluval or sun sun. used head to head, i prefer the sun sun over the us made fluval.imo this is a matter of personal experiences. without proof of infringement or refusing to go into detail???do you have any proof that they are unethical?or did you just decide that you do not like their products, and this is all personal?? if you have any proof i would love to see it so i can stay away from this "unethical" company.

Actually this company has taken the Via Aqua line of pumps out from under them so that Via Aqua has discontinued the line (such as the VA 305 now the NP-305), as well many for their UV Sterilizer products are far from the best:
http://aquariumopinions.com/2012/02/03/hang-on-uv-filter-review/

Even the AquaTop Canister filter, has some issues with leakage and are not the same canister filters sold by others that have made proprietary corrections to the same canister filter made by SunSun but branded by AquaTop
Even this company also does not make claims about the UV efficiency of these filters as AquaTop/TruAqua, as these are clarifiers at best
Reference: http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/ViaAqua750CanisterFilter.html

What I can also say, since I am in the business, is I have a friend who has been in the business for many-many years that they (AquaTop) actually attempted legal action against just because he was selling products that fit AquaTop products, but was only claiming that they fit, no different than an auto parts stores selling parts to fit a Ford that are not made by Ford.

As well a distributor I have purchased from was offered the original distributorship for their products, then he went around them less than a year later

BTW, I am not knocking all Chinese products, you're right, there are many good Chinese products, but I know from experience that there are good ones and bad ones.
As well many of these products are oversold on what they are, often calling a UV Clarifier a UV Sterilizer when in fact they do not have the proper dwell time, flow rate, and even use medium pressure UV bulbs instead of the much more efficient low pressure UV bulb
Reference:
http://www.uvsterilizerreview.com/2013/10/actual-uv-c-emission-from-uv-bulb.html

Often the same SunSun Filter is purchased and sold by one company with more filter material, or a submersible UV is sold without the prefilter, just to lower the price

Thanks for the feedback Gregg and SANDYBOTTOM - didn't get much feedback initially so decided to go with the Mr Aqua rimless 11.4 gallon. Gives me a little more water and looks good!
