trumpet snails in a bare 1/2 gallon jar

So I am preparing to move and had to give away the fish in my 50 gal (an angel fish, school of albino zebra danios, school of albino cories). Found a great home with an experienced enthusiast so that was great.

I put my aquarium up on craigslist and kept it full of water because an empty aquarium looks sad. I didn't even think about my trumpet snails for like a week, then I realized they were still in there. I have two big ones and who knows how many little ones. Honestly I did nothing for another week, and I don't seem to have any little ones anymore.

My guilt got to me, and I stuck the two big ones in a half gallon vase with a sinking catfish wafer.

Can I just keep them in there, doing a 50% water change every couple days, and replacing the wafer occasionally, until they die of old age or whatever?

The vase has a really weird lip thing, that goes back into the vase and up again and then flairs inward. I don't think they'll get out, but if they do I doubt they'd get far before I noticed.

Possibly. I whole wafer might be too much at a time though and just muck up the water. For the six mts I recently put in a 5g a small pea sized amount of wafer lasts about 2 days.

A couple tbls or so of gravel or sand would give more area for some algae to grow to supplement their diet, just a thought.

Trumpet snails don't require much & like Livemermaid07 pointed out, a whole wafer might be too much & just cause water quality issues. I'm sure they'll be fine in that jar as long as you change the water like you said you planned to do & feed them sparingly.

I'm curious, have you sold that tank yet on CL? If you haven't I wouldn't drain the water from it yet. In addition to looking sad, an aquarium that has already been filled with water can develop leaks if it's allowed to sit empty for too long. The sealant will dry out & shrink/shrivel possibly causing leaks to develop when you attempt to refill it again.

Just a friendly FYI that any buyer or seller of aquariums on CL (or anywhere else for that matter) should be aware of .
