my neighbours friend lives in an old peoples home, and hes been told he can have a pet fish. now unfortunately he has his 'tank' already, its a gallon bowl, no filter, nothing. he wants a goldfish :jaw-dropping: this morning he visited her while i was talking to her, and he asked me if i was the lady who kept goldfish for pets. i told him i was, and why he wanted to know, and he asked me how much 1 would cost.

my immediate thoughts were he has no idea about how to properly care for one, but i said well they only cost a few pounds each, however you do know you will need a large tank for them. and he agreed and i had to leave as my kids were shouting me. my neighbour came round when he had left and told me he has a less than 1 gallon plastic bowl, but he only wants 1 goldfish and would this be ok :irked:

i told her no it wont, if he wants a goldfish, he needs a big tank, and they shouldnt be housed alone as they are social, he woud need a big tank. i have told her the best fish he could have would be a betta, and i can give him a small filter i have spare, but realistically he will need at least a 5 gallon tank for one.

she had to go as she was going out but i told her please please do not buy him a goldfish as its cruelty, i think she will listen to me but only time will tell.

i know this is a pointless post, but i needed a rant :mad2::swear:

maybe i should bring him to mine to see my 6 foot tank with goldfish so he can get some idea on their sizes and needs etc

If he is truly interested then showing him yours should give him some appreciation.

Why dont you tell him that goldfish eat allot, need an immense tank and actually cost allot in the long run. Also would any of you like to have my common goldfish i really need to re-home them.

I think a betta would be fine- he could do a 3 gallon tank and be ok- something like an Eclipse that comes with everything the tank needs (in a ursing home the heat is usually high, I doubt they'd need a heater). Lower maintenance for the most part, and I think more fun to look at than a goldie anyway.:banher:

:argue: dont know about the old guy my neighbour knows who wants a goldfish, but im furious, my best friend has now gone out and bought a 12 litre 'goldfish' starter tank for her son, and a comet goldfish to go in there. this being just 3 weeks or so since we talked and she said a goldfish isnt right for her as they need big tanks, and she was going to get him a fighter fish and let him pick which colour :argue: today i visited her, and she had the tank half full of water, right from the tap, no dechlorinator. at least she has got a little filter. i went and picked up some dechlorinator for her (or should i say for the fish) and did a water change as he has been in this half full tank for a whole week with no water change and being fed every 5 mins from her 3 year old son. the fish is now looking much happier in an albeit tiny tank which is at least now full to the top of fresh dechlorinated water.

why is it so many people can be guided to do right by these poor creatures and still prove totally ignorant regardless :wall: my friend has even seen my goldfish and knows how big they can get and mine are nowhere near full grown!

Oh hey Lupin Fancy meeting you here :) anyways 1 fancy only needs 20g and an additional 10g for any other additional Goldfish so not really that big :) maybe you can persuade her onto getting a 20g? your Local CL might have some cheap 2nds

unfortunately shes said she isnt interested in getting a bigger tank as she cant really be bothered with this little one now she knows she has to clean it out every week, and she will just see how long it makes it and then maybe get him a fighter fish instead of a goldfish.

Gotta love the logic she came up with...
