Tufa rock?

Is this stuff safe for a freshwater setup? I bought some and then noticed a white powder type stuff on it. Should I put it in the yard and buy something else?

I may do that anyway, I'm not sure I like the way it looks now.

I have a tufa rock in a tank with some shelldwellers. They like hard water so it's not a problem.

Tufa rock would make a great set up for purple string loving species, just like the tufadermus purpeliamus. I'm currently breeding some and I can fax them to you if you get a nice tufa with purple string setup.
