So I was preparing to build a pond for my one female adult red ear slider turtle for her to live in all year round. My mom and me decided to delay it till next year so we can get the right information on how deep it should be, were we wanted to locate it, how to build it, and so on. Well for about a month or 2 the turtle has been outside in a tank to get use to the drop of the water and air temp for when she was going to go into the pond. Well I decided to take her out of the tank today since it was really nice for her to walk around the yard. She walked around for awhile and then we lost her.

I ended up finding her hiding herself under a bush. So that was ok and we let her be again. After some more time we went back to check and couldn't find her again. After a LONG search we discovered she burried herself under the leaves and dirt.

My question is, is this a sign that she knows to hibernate? If so is this a sign that she'll hiberante out of the water?

If so then that means were jsut going get the 125g preformed pond for her since she'll hibernate on the land.

She's probably just trying to hide. Aquatic turtles hibernate underwater for the winter. Where you are, if you make your pond 4' deep at its deepest point, that should be plenty of depth to allow it to overwinter outside.

Darn, I was hoping it was hibernating because she had herself really good under everything.

Also I do know of people whos aquatic turtles get out of there ponds and hibernate in the ground instead of the water.

Guess we might have to wait till next year for pond.

coach_z you may get to see one in spring now! Me and mom are now deciding on size of pond, we figured its going be atleast 5' deep so hibernation will not be a problem with us. I'll let you now.
