I've taken on the job of setting up a preschool's 20 gallon tank and I'd like to give it a playground theme. I won't be able to plant it unless I spring for the new lighting myself so think of an urban school yard. We have open-ended plastic hamster tubes I'll make into a play structure. I also have a little hamster house that looks like a climbing fort. I was thinking of just using sky blue paper for the background, maybe add some clouds. I'll make a little fountain of bubbles with a small bubble ring.

Does anyone have any other ideas for a playground theme? Also, which fish do you think would be most likely to play in the hamster tubes?
:girl:

hamsters. . . with tiny scuba gear. . . yes.

How about a tire swing - wood, with one of those big rubber wheels you get in lego??

Build a little square to hold some aquarium sand, and voila, a sand box. You could probably find some little sandbox "toys" in barbie accesories.

Actually, barbie stuff would probably have a little picnic table too....

Alright I am just LOVING all of Shawna's ideas. Some fish that would go well in the tank would be Cories, Bettas, Guppies, Mollies, Otos. I think all of those fish would utilize the tubes and other decor.

Well thankyou :) This would be a great idea for a childsroom as well!! How cool would that be!!

Sorry for the double post - but a teeter toter wouldn't be too hard to build either out of dowling or small peices of wood. Just be sure to seal any wood products before you put them in the tank ;)

so i guess deep-sea hamsters are out then?

are you just setting it up or are you going to be going in and maintaining this tank for the preschool? the only thing i would worry about is if a lot of algae begins to grow on the decor, then it would look more like an abandoned playground. . . I'm sure you could deal with it, but preschool teachers seem like they have enough to deal with already. ;)

Thanks! I'm going in once a week to do the tank maintenance but I'll have to trust the teacher to do the feeding.

I think I'll get some cories, amano shimp and a few platties or mollies. I don't want to crowd the tank, especially since it won't be planted. The sandbox idea sounds great. The kids have a square playdoh cookie cutter that would work really well for the box frame.

Hopefully this will be a playground the fish will actually play in. Thanks for the ideas!
